Police in Rwampara District are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding a fire outbreak that occurred at Rwenyaga Secondary School in Rwenyaga cell, Ryamiyonga Parish, Mwizi subcounty, Rwampara District on April 14, 2024, around 7:30 PM.
It is reported that on the aforementioned date and time, while most of the students were attending a football match between Arsenal and Aston Villa in the school’s main hall, a fire broke out in the Felix block, which houses two dormitories: Peace, accommodating 48 students, and Rich, accommodating 32 students. Fortunately, a senior six student who was revising in a nearby classroom promptly alerted the teachers, who immediately disconnected the electricity.
The fire originated in the Peace dormitory, but efforts were made to salvage property from the Rich dormitory. Despite attempts to extinguish the fire with water and soil, all property in the Peace Dormitory was destroyed, including the roof.
Thankfully, no students were harmed during the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest that a charcoal flat iron left unattended on a bed may have been the cause of the fire outbreak.
Inquiries into the matter are still ongoing.
