Residents of Nyakagyeme sub-county in Rukungiri district are expressing concerns about the resurgence of theft in their area. They note that this problem, which had been relatively dormant a few months ago, has now returned with heightened activity, causing worry among residents.
According to Fednand Gumisiriza, a resident, the situation has become dire, with thieves targeting animals, crops, household equipment, money, and even cooked food. Gumisiriza lamented that losses occur frequently now, as criminals are frequently spotted loitering in the area, searching for items to steal.
Recently, thieves entered the farm of the late Karakire and injured one of the cows by cutting off one of its legs. Shockingly, one of the thieves was apprehended while roasting the stolen meat.
Gumisiriza appealed to security officials, led by the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC), to address the issue promptly and take necessary actions to rectify the situation.
Godson Mubangizi, the LC 3 chairperson of Nyakagyeme sub-county, confirmed the prevalence of theft in the area, stating that his office has witnessed an increase in reported cases compared to previous months. He mentioned the formation of security committees in various parts of the sub-county, including Kahoko and Kasoroza trading center, with plans to extend this initiative to Kyamurari.
Responding to the concerns, Rukungiri RDC Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom stated that his office had not yet received an official report regarding theft in Nyakagyeme but assured that they would investigate the matter. He urged residents to remain vigilant and secure their property while awaiting assistance from security personnel.
