The leadership of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga Faction in Rukungiri District has announced the removal of party primaries for the upcoming 2026 general elections. This decision was communicated by Gadson Mutabazi, the FDC Chairperson for the Southern Division, during a retreat held today, Wednesday, 14th August 2024, at Marumba Trading Center, Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.

In his speech, Mutabazi explained that flag bearers will be selected through a consensus process at the village level. These selected candidates will then be forwarded to the election commission. If consensus fails, the authorities will vet the candidates.

Perezi Rumanzi, an activist with the FDC Katonga Faction who officiated at the event, noted several loopholes among FDC members in Rukungiri District, who seem more focused on positions rather than the broader struggle for power. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the struggle before seeking positions.

Aloysius Mugarura, the FDC Chairperson for Rukungiri District, reassured supporters that the party remains strong, driven by the country’s serious challenges.

Honest Tushemereirwe, the Vice Chairperson of FDC Rukungiri Municipality, attributed the recent decline in party strength to issues such as bribery and disunity. He called for reconciliation, unity, and the importance of attending FDC mission prayers held on the last Tuesday of every month at their offices.

Richard Byamukama Rutaraka criticized the focus on positions rather than embracing the struggle for power. He also condemned the decision of Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye to step down, which he believes weakened the party.
