It was a joyful occasion as Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, the 6th Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, visited the Rukungiri District headquarters, highlighting the importance of a strong working relationship between the church and the government.
Bishop Onesmus emphasized the influence of leaders in society, urging people to respect leaders at all levels, as leadership is ordained by God. He explained that his visit to the district headquarters was motivated by the need for a collaborative relationship between church leaders, government officials, and civil servants to promote community development.
In his sermon, Bishop Asiimwe called on leaders and civil servants to prioritize God in their work by repenting for their sins, noting that repentance is not just for the poor, depressed, or uneducated. He challenged district authorities, particularly those in the District Service Commission and the Human Resources Office, to be prudent in hiring new workers, urging them to avoid corruption and sexual harassment.
He also condemned negative workplace behaviors such as rumor-mongering, witchcraft, and sexual harassment, warning that these practices can severely undermine service delivery.
Speaking on behalf of the civil servants, Hajj Swaliki Masokoi Wasswa, the Rukungiri Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), praised Bishop Onesmus for his wise decision to preach the gospel to civil servants, noting that the bishop’s visit will have a significant impact on the work ethic of the employees. He acknowledged that some workers are still influenced by witchcraft and expressed hope that the bishop’s message will lead to change.
Geoffrey Kyomukama, the Rukungiri District Chairperson, noted that this was the first time a bishop had visited the district headquarters on a pastoral mission. He commended the bishop for his efforts in spreading the gospel to all people, regardless of their social class.
