The territorial police in Kanungu have reported a fatal road accident that has resulted in five deaths.
The incident occurred on June 22, 2024, at approximately 05:30 PM at Nyakashure, along the Rukungiri-Kihihi highway in Kanungu district.
The collision involved two motor vehicles: a trailer with registration number RAD 940J/RL1455 and a blue Isuzu ELF with registration number UAW 904R.
Four victims who died at the scene were Byamukama Fred, the driver, Akandwanaho Reagan, Kyarisima Thereza, Tumuramye Genariyo.
All were residents of Kinanira cell, Burora parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri district. Additionally, an unidentified male adult succumbed to injuries at the hospital where he was taken.
According to reports, the trailer (Reg. no. RAD 940J/RL1455) was traveling from Rukungiri towards Kihihi. Upon reaching Nyakashure, the driver allegedly veered out of his lane, colliding with the oncoming Isuzu ELF (Reg. no. UAW 904R), which was traveling in its lane from Kihihi.
Police were notified and promptly arrived at the scene.
The injured were transported to Kihihi Health Center IV, where the fifth victim later died. The bodies of the other four deceased were also taken to the same health center’s mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Both vehicles involved in the accident have been towed to Nyamirima police station for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
Investigations to determine the cause of the accident are currently ongoing.
