The family of Hassani Tumusiime Matovu found themselves stranded in the air after their home was forcefully demolished, with the police from Rukungiri Central Police Station overseeing the operation.
Hassani, a 35-year-old father, has had a difficult family history. He was taken in by his grandparents, the late Hajj Nuru Matovu and his wife late Nakyanzi Howa, as his parents, Matovu Issah and Mauda Kyotungire, separated before his birth. Matovu Issah disappeared, while Mauda Kyotungire passed away when Hassani was still very young. Consequently, his grandparents raised him as their own.
Nakyanzi Howa had bequeathed her properties to Hassani Tumusiime Matovu, a decision contested by other family members in court. However, on Monday, May 27, 2024, everything was finally settled, and the house was demolished.
Hassani Tumusiime Matovu criticized his relatives for what he perceived as an abuse of the legal system, highlighting that his house was demolished without a court order. He appealed for assistance from relevant stakeholders.
Medard Byomuhangi, the Chairperson of LC1 Nyamayenje A Cell, attributed Hassani’s eviction to discrepancies in documents.
Yasin Mugisha, an elder in the family, reassured that the court had dismissed the case, and the properties were distributed according to the law by the administrators, bringing about order after five years of legal proceedings.
