Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, reported that excessive alcohol consumption severely impacted the NRM primaries for the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
During his address at the Rukiiko Hall in Kisoro District on Friday, Dr. Odoi described the intoxication levels among voters as “deplorable,” mentioning that some individuals were so inebriated they fell asleep on candidates’ posters.
Dr. Odoi also raised concerns about the involvement of students and religious leaders in the electoral process. In one instance, Nicholas Ninzeyimana, a 21-year-old Senior Six student from Kisoro Progressive Secondary School, was arrested at Saaza Playground polling station after attempting to forcefully enter.
Despite these issues, Dr. Odoi commended voters for maintaining peace throughout the election process.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, minor incidents were managed at various polling stations.
At the time of reporting, vote counting was underway at the Kisoro District Rukiiko Hall under the supervision of Dr. Tanga Odoi.
