The government of Uganda has taken a significant step towards revamping Eight Secondary Schools in Kigezi Sub Region with a grant from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and support of a concessionary credit facility from the World Bank.
Among the Eight beneficiary schools are Kigezi High School, St. Mary’s College Rushoroza, and Kigezi College Butobere, among others. The Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang says that Eight schools were carefully selected as part of a broader plan to improve 120 traditional secondary schools across the country and that the project was spearheaded by none other than the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni.
Minister Ogwang, expressed his enthusiasm about the initiative and highlighted the crucial role these schools play in the country’s education system.
He stated that the project will begin with the oldest schools, some of which were established in the 1940s. He revealed to our reporter that as more funds become available, there is a possibility of extending the program to include more schools in need.
The Head Teacher of Kigezi College Butobere, Justus Mastiko, spoke about the positive impact this refurbishment program will have on the schools and the entire education community.
He emphasized that the overhaul will not only attract more learners but also significantly improve the learning environment. Currently, most of the school structures and sanitary facilities are in a deplorable condition, hindering the students’ ability to learn effectively.
