Residents of Ryengyerero Parish in Rurehe Sub-County, Mitooma District, have continued to express concern over the increasing crime rates in their area.

Reports indicate a rise in cases such as theft, murder, and rape. According to some residents, this surge in crime is largely attributed to increased drug abuse, particularly among the youth. Substances like marijuana, khat, and alcohol have reportedly become common among young people, contributing to their involvement in criminal activities.

Godfrey Mugisha, a resident of Ryengyerero Cell, noted that drug abuse among the youth is alarmingly high, which has led to a rise in theft cases. He added that this situation has forced farmers and other community members to stay awake at night to safeguard their property.

Mugisha further criticized the police, accusing them of failing to apprehend criminals. He alleged that officers accept bribes and release suspects without taking proper action.

Dominic Tumuhaise, another resident of the area, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the youth are heavily involved in crime due to drug influence. He also blamed law enforcement for not doing their job effectively, adding that even when community members take steps to punish wrongdoers, the criminals are either released or only briefly detained.

Evelyne Muhimbo, the LC3 Chairperson of Rurehe Sub County, acknowledged that they have continuously discussed the issue. She, however, shifted part of the blame to the government, urging it to take stronger measures to restrict the importation and circulation of harmful drugs in the country. Muhimbo believes that banning such substances could be the most effective way to curb the growing crimes linked to drug addiction.
