There was drama at Rwejeru Church of Uganda in Rwenjeru Ward, Nyakabirizi Division, Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality, as residents clashed with municipal leaders over the status of a 5-kilometer road.
This happened during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting, where residents demanded a report from municipal officials regarding the long-awaited road stretching from Bushenyi Town to Rwenjeru.
Andrew Amanya, one of the residents, asked the authorities to clarify whether the road would be rehabilitated or tarmacked, as was earlier communicated by the municipality.
Daniel Kakyere, a resident of Matyazo Cell in Nyakabirizi Division, expressed concern that they had signed consent forms and surrendered part of their land for the road project, only to now hear rumors that the road might not be worked on.
In response, Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality Mayor Richard Byaruhanga assured the residents that the road will be constructed using funds from the Uganda Road Fund.
He explained that the municipality is operating with a limited resource envelope. He noted that designing the 5km road would require over UGX 150 million, but due to budget constraints, they used UGX 15 million to design only part of the road.
