A truck driver has died while his turnman sustained injuries following a single fatal road accident that occurred at Munyaga Bridge along the Bwindi–Butogota road in Kanungu District.

According to the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the accident happened on March 11, 2026, at around 5:00 p.m.

The crash involved a FAW Sino truck, registration number UBR 167B, with a white head and a green carrier, which was transporting iron ore from the Bwindi side and heading to Kampala.

Police identified the deceased as Mukunya Philip, a Mugishu by tribe and a resident of Maruka Adra Industrial Division in Mbale City. He was the driver of the truck and reportedly died on the spot after the vehicle overturned into River Munyaga.

The injured victim has been identified as Mugabe Richard, 39, a Muganda and also a resident of Maruka Adra Industrial Division in Mbale City. Mugabe was working as the truck’s turnman at the time of the accident.

Preliminary police reports indicate that as the driver approached Munyaga Bridge, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which overturned and plunged into River Munyaga.

Police officers led by the Kanungu District Traffic Officer, ASP Nsabiyera Herbert, visited and documented the scene. The injured victim was rushed to Doctors Case Clinic in Kihihi Town for medical attention, while the body of the deceased was taken to Bwindi Community Hospital for a postmortem examination.

ASP Maate said the suspected cause of the accident is brake failure, although investigations into the incident are ongoing.
