Police in Rukungiri District are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 22-year-old man who was allegedly killed by a mob after being suspected of robbery.
The deceased has been identified as Crispus Nuwamanya, a resident of Kayaga Cell in Kakindo Parish, Bugangari Sub-county, Rukungiri District.
According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the incident occurred on March 11, 2026, at around 9:50 p.m. in Kirundo Village, Rugoma Parish, Ruhinda Sub-county.
Maate explained that police at Ruhinda Police Station received information that suspected robbers had attacked the home of Muhozi Vincent Taifa, a 61-year-old businessman and resident of Kirundo Village. Officers responded to the scene and found that one of the suspected robbers, later identified as Nuwamanya, had already been apprehended by residents and severely beaten by a mob. The second suspect reportedly managed to escape and remains unidentified.
Police quickly rushed the injured suspect to Rukungiri Health Centre IV for treatment, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body was later transferred to Buyanja Health Centre III where a postmortem examination was conducted before it was handed over to the relatives for burial.
Two suspects have since been arrested to assist police with investigations. They have been identified as Muhozi Vincent Taifa, 61, and Baguma Felix Kariwano, 24.
Police say inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
