A devastating road accident on the evening of November 29, 2024, claimed 10 lives and left several others severely injured in Rubanda District. The accident occurred at around 10:10 PM in Kamuserwa Cell, Nyarurambi Ward, Rubanda Town Council, along the Kabale-Kisoro Road.
The accident involved a white Toyota Hiace minibus (registration UBK 037G) that failed to negotiate a sharp corner, reportedly due to brake failure. The vehicle overturned and plunged approximately 100 meters off the road. Eight victims died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries on arrival at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.
The deceased include: Isabirye Charles (35), the driver, 2 unidentified male adults, 3 unidentified female adults, 3 unidentified female juveniles, and 1 unidentified male juvenile.
Thirty passengers, mostly Congolese nationals, sustained injuries. Many are believed to be refugee escapees heading to Rwamwanja Refugee Camp in Kamwenge District. The survivors include men, women, and children as young as two months old.
Among the injured are: Twagira Huzaika (31) from Bunagana, DRC; and Numerous refugees from Rwamwanja and Kyaka camps, including families and young children.
Medical staff at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital are providing treatment and food assistance as authorities coordinate with the refugee camp and other stakeholders to arrange for the victims’ care and transportation.
A team led by ASP Abantu Habert, supported by traffic officers and medics from Muko Health Center IV, rushed to the scene to assist. Ambulances transported victims to the hospital, where further care is being administered.
Senior officers, including Acting Regional Traffic Officer ASP Mucunguzi Wilson and Rubanda District Traffic Officer, visited the site and engaged with the hospital administration. The hospital has pledged continued support for the victims while arrangements are made to transfer discharged survivors and the deceased to their final destinations.
The vehicle’s wreckage has been towed to the Rubanda Police Station for inspection. Investigations are underway, with police recording statements from survivors to establish the exact cause of the accident.
This tragedy underscores the critical need for strict adherence to road safety measures, particularly in areas with challenging terrain. Authorities are urging drivers to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance to prevent mechanical failures, which remain a leading cause of road accidents.
As investigations continue, authorities and humanitarian organizations are working to provide support for the victims and their families.
