Residents from Ruhiinda Sub County and Bikurungu Town Council, both located in Rujumbura County, Rukungiri district, have voiced their concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of the Nyarwimuka bridge.
They assert that it poses a significant hindrance to the transportation of people, goods, and services in the area.
During a community effort yesterday aimed at reinforcing the bridge with logs, the chairperson of Omwibumba village in Nyarwimuka parish, Ruhinda Sub County, expressed distress over the vital role the bridge plays for the local populace. They emphasized its importance for accessing Kurungu market, schools, and Bikurungu Health Centre 3.
William Niwagaba, the LC 1 chairperson of Kanshekye 2 cell in Bikurungu town council, highlighted the dire state of the bridge, which has persisted for over 15 years. He mentioned tragic incidents where lives were lost or endangered due to the condition of the bridge.
The plight of the bridge attracted the attention of Annah Tumuramye, a concerned resident of Rukungiri district, who provided sturdy logs to assist with the community’s efforts.
Both LC 1 leaders expressed disappointment in the Rujumbura county MP, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, accusing him of failing to fulfill his promise to address the bridge’s issues made during the January 2021 election campaign.
Residents acknowledged Tumuramye’s support, recognizing its temporary relief for transportation challenges in the area.
Some residents conveyed their dissatisfaction with the service delivery in their area, despite their historical support for the NRM government.
