Rwegongo and Kanyinya residents are stranded and stuck after the bridge which connects the areas to Kisiizi Health Centre III was left impassable by a heavy Sino truck while attempting to cross.

They are now calling for urgent response and action from the government since social economic transformation activities have recently come to a standstill.

Speaking with Boona Radio, the Kanyinya Cell LC1 Chairperson Mr. Barebwoha Siliva, in partnership with the Rwegongo LC1 Chairperson Mr. Birungi Lazaaro, said that the bridge is found at the shallow between Rwegongo Cell and Kanyinya Cell, Kisiizi Parish, Nyarushanje, along the road which connects Kisiizi to Nyakishenyi Subcounty known as the “Kisiizi Petrol Station – Nyakishenyi Road.”

These local leaders assured Boona Radio that the bridge was left in a deteriorating state by a heavy Sino truck which was carrying sand for Mr. Cleofas Bakuuta, after attempting to cross the already weak bridge. They added that transport and trade activities have come to a standstill recently and residents no longer have anywhere to pass to access medical services at Kisiizi Health Centre III since no vehicle can attempt to cross.

Residents, led by Tumwebaze Abel and Kyomukama Scovia Kabananura, with great sorrow, appealed to Boona Radio saying that they no longer access services at Kisiizi Health Centre III and have nowhere to transport their farm products and access other services since the road is currently blocked.

They added that even vehicles carrying medicines to Kisiizi Health Centre III have nowhere to pass, which has left medical services stranded.

They confirmed that the heavy Sino truck is the one which caused the bridge to collapse and left the road in a deteriorating state. They called for immediate action and response from the responsible upper leaders and the government.

However, the Nyarushanje LC3 Chairperson Mr. Michael Musiime responded that he isn’t aware of the deteriorating bridge and road at all, and suggested informing the Rukungiri District Local Government since it is the one supposed to monitor the Kisiizi – Nyakishenyi – Kanungu Road.

In response, the Rukungiri District LC5 Chairperson Mr. Geoffrey Kyomukama also said that he hasn’t received any information about the broken bridge, despite expressing sympathy toward the affected residents. He pledged to carry out thorough investigations and monitoring to ensure the bridge is reconstructed and asked for patience from the affected residents.
