Tragedy struck at Byarutagara Trading Centre in Nyamasinda village, Nyanamo Town Council, Kisoro District, when a three-year-old boy, Dan Ainembabazi, lost his life in a road accident involving a Toyota Land Cruiser.
The fatal incident occurred at around noon along the Rubuguri–Nyanamo murram road. According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the toddler, son to Deusi Twinamatsiko, reportedly entered the road abruptly and was run over by the speeding vehicle. The driver, identified as 44-year-old Christopher Ngabirano, a resident of the Southern Division in Kabale Municipality, was heading towards Nyanamo Town Council from the Rubuguri side when the unfortunate event occurred.
Efforts by the driver to brake were futile, and the child died on the spot after being hit by the front tires.
Police officers led by ASP Michael Kushaba, the officer in charge of traffic in the area, quickly responded to the scene. The incident was documented, and the body of the deceased was taken to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Statements have been recorded from eyewitnesses and the bereaved family, and the vehicle involved is currently pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
ASP Maate urged all parents and guardians to always accompany and closely supervise young children, especially near busy or motorable roads, to prevent such heartbreaking occurrences.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
