A catechist in Kanungu district is on the run after stealing two envelopes with 1 million shillings from the church.
The accused catechist has been identified as Wakubariho Julius from Kyenjojo church of Uganda in Nyamirama Archdeaconry in the Kinkizi diocese.
It is alleged that the accused Catechist was invited by his counterpart who is also a Catechist at Nyamirama Archdeaconry Arineitwe Henry to accompany him as his best man at his enthronement.
According to the informers, Henry trusted Julius and tasked him to hold a basket and receive offertories during the Thanksgiving session as a friend who has been with him in service for a couple of days.
In the process, Julius spotted two envelops one from the Kinkizi West legislator James Kaberuka and another from Christians with 500000 each, he secretly picked the two envelops from the basket and hid them in his jacket but a curious woman who was attending the service realized this and was suspicious.
After handing over the basket to the priest for prayers, the accused went to the toilet and removed the money from the envelopes and threw empty envelopes into the toilet but was followed by the other curious woman who noticed him removing the money from the envelop and hard to notify other Christians.
After realizing that he was noticed, the accused took off with the money which forced Christians to break the toilet and remove the envelopes to confirm the allegation only to realize that it was true.
Speaking with Arineitwe Henry the Nyimirama Archdeaconry Catechist, confirmed the incident and said that they are considering taking matters to the diocese to find a solution whether matters will be handled inside the church or in the courts of law.
