Police in Rukungiri are investigating circumstances surrounding the death that took place at around 06:00 pm on 10th September 2023 of a 73-year-old woman from Bugarama cell, Bugangari parish, and Bugangari sub-county in Rukungiri District that took place at around 18:00 on 10.09.2023.
According to the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the deceased was identified as Kogyire Lydia a resident of Bugarama cell, Bugangari parish, Bugangari Sub County in Rukungiri District.
It is alleged that on Sunday morning Kongyire Lydia, now the deceased was seen by her son Akankwasa Keleb doing domestic work at her home, and at around 5:30 PM, Turyakira Jackeline while coming from Bugangari church headed to her home found Akankwasa Kereb and Ainembabazi Elias (Grandsons to the deceased) at Akankwasa’s home.
Ainembabazi Elias told Turyakira Jackline that he had come to visit her grandmother but couldn’t get her home, She continued to her home a few meters from the deceased’s home and changed clothes then preceded to the deceased’s home to give her the message from the church as she has always done on Sundays but upon reaching, the main house was open, but she called and no one responded.
She went ahead and cross-checked the kitchen and found it temporarily closed, then opened the door and saw the leg of the deceased while lying down dead.
She went back immediately and informed Akankwasa Kereb and Ainembabazi Elias and (grandson) and moved ahead to inform others.
Atwongirwe Pias, a teacher at Nyanganjara primary school, resident of Bugarama cell, Bugangari parish, and Bugangari sub-county in Rukungiri District reported the murder case at Bugangari police station under ref 06/10/09/2024
The crime scene was visited and processed and the Body was conveyed to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary pending postmortem.
Akankwasa Kereb has been arrested to assist in the investigations
