Bushenyi District’s Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Robert Atuhairwe, urged schools in the area to incorporate patriotism into their curriculum as a means to combat negative behaviors such as suicide, alcoholism, and protests.

Addressing secondary school head teachers from Bushenyi District, Atuhairwe emphasized that instilling patriotism in young students would foster a deep love for their country, leading to a reduction in societal issues like alcoholism and protests.

“We understand the challenges facing your schools, but introducing patriotism is crucial as we groom future leaders and active citizens. The future belongs to those who are prepared, and we must prepare them,” Mr. Atuhairwe stated.

He further noted that the initiative was in line with the President’s recent launch of a similar program in Kitebi Secondary School, Wakiso District, and emphasized the importance of teaching students love devotion, and attachment to their society and nation.

According to Mr. Atuhairwe, fostering self-love and love for the country in students could help eradicate societal problems like corruption and homosexuality, which he deemed as against the natural order.

The District Education Officer, Mr. Williams Ahabwe, mentioned that the department had deployed school inspectors in every sub-county to facilitate smoother operations.

“We have introduced school inspectors in each sub-county to assist with oversight. I encourage schools to cooperate with them, as they may uncover issues that you are not aware of,” Mr. Ahabwe advised.

Ms. Doreen Nuwasiima, Head Teacher of Rubingo Secondary School, expressed support for the concept but highlighted challenges, particularly in private schools where financial constraints may hinder implementation.

“While the idea is commendable, some private schools may struggle to implement it without support from higher authorities, as they are profit-driven. Convincing owners may take time,” Ms. Nuwasiima explained.
