The Traffic office in Bushenyi District has raised the alarm over the escalating number of road accidents, attributing 70% of these cases to bodaboda riders.

Joachim Mugumya Baruku, the District Traffic Officer, revealed that Bushenyi records an average of 25 road accidents each month, with five being fatal, 13 categorized as serious, and five as minor. He highlighted the significant involvement of bodaboda riders in these incidents.

Mugumya shared these concerns during a road safety campaign organized by the Lions Club of Bushenyi. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about road safety as a critical measure to reduce fatalities and injuries.

Benon Kataate, the Lions Club District Governor, emphasized that many road accidents are preventable if road users, particularly bodaboda riders, adhere to traffic rules, follow road signs, and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

Alice Kamusiime, President of the Lions Club of Bushenyi, reiterated the club’s commitment to promoting road safety through public education on the importance of obeying road signs. She stressed that such efforts are vital to reducing the alarming number of deaths on Ugandan roads.

According to a recent traffic accident report, Uganda recorded 432 road accidents within a specified period. Of these, 97 were fatal, 202 were serious, and 133 were minor. The report also documented the loss of 100 lives and injuries sustained by 324 individuals.

Efforts like the Lions Club campaign highlight the urgent need for collective action to address road safety concerns in Bushenyi and beyond.
