The authorities of Buhunga Nursery and Primary School have expressed concern over the insufficient number of classroom blocks, leading to overcrowding among pupils. Located in Buhunga subcounty, Rukungiri district, the school, with an enrollment of over 700 pupils, faces the challenge of inadequate classrooms.

Mr. Auther Byaruhanga Muchope, the headteacher, highlighted the continuous increase in the pupil population without the construction of new classrooms, resulting in congestion. Despite this overcrowding, he emphasized that the school has maintained high academic performance, securing the 1st position in Rukungiri district based on the recently released primary 6 and 4 exams.

Mr. Auther shared these concerns during the graduation ceremony for pupils completing their pre-primary level. He emphasized that the limited number of classrooms forces children to occupy tight spaces, negatively impacting their learning experience. The inadequacy extends to other essential facilities such as toilets and general infrastructure.

Calling on the government to prioritize educational infrastructure upgrades, Mr. Auther urged for increased attention to address these challenges. The guest of honor, Frank Arinaitwe Rukanigwa, commended parents, teachers, and pupils for their cooperation. He appealed to parents to fulfill their responsibilities by limiting their children’s exposure to luxurious lifestyles, especially during the long holiday, suggesting engagement in constructive activities to prevent them from falling into unfavorable circumstances.

Despite the existing challenges, Mr. Rukanigwa acknowledged the school’s commendable performance and pledged ongoing support. Allen Kiconco, the headteacher of the nursery section, expressed gratitude to parents who attended the graduation ceremony and encouraged them to provide continuous support to their children, particularly by ensuring they have the necessary school supplies.
