Residents of Nyakinengo parish in Nyakagyeme sub-county, Rukungiri district, and those from Bikomero parish in Rugyeyo sub-county are urging the leaders of their respective districts to address the poor state of a crucial road that connects the two areas.

This road traverses Bikomero in Rugyeyo sub-county, Kanungu, and Nyakagyeme sub-county in Rukungiri, serving as a vital link between the two districts. Boda boda cyclists from Kanungu are facing difficulties crossing into both districts, as they are forced to pay between 3000-5000 to transport their motorcycles across a muddy and blocked section.

The road’s current condition is preventing some motor vehicles from using it, despite it being the shortest route to connect the two districts through Birara Bridge. Local residents, including David Kashaba and others from Nyakinengo parish, highlight the challenges in transporting agricultural produce to market centers, emphasizing the need for urgent road improvement, especially as the festival season approaches.

Geoffery Kyomukama, the Rukungiri district chairperson, notes that the road falls under the jurisdiction of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), and they have already informed them about the issue. He adds that the Minister of Works and Transport has advised all districts to temporarily halt road rehabilitation due to the ongoing rain, as it may lead to quick deterioration. Kyomukama urges residents to remain patient while awaiting action on the road improvement.
