Residents of Bugyera Parish in Buyanja County, Rukungiri District, are decrying the poor state of their roads.

The condition of roads in Bugyera Parish has sparked outcry among residents. The most affected roads include Rwere, Omukashenyi, Nyakiju, and Shugyezi, which are vital for transporting crops and other goods.

Speaking to our reporter, Rurunda Bruno, a resident, said they are now facing high transport costs because they are forced to use longer routes to transport passengers and cargo to town. He called upon the relevant authorities to address their concerns and take action to construct their roads.

Kashagama Edison, the Chairperson LC1 of Nyakiju Village in Bugyera Parish, said the current state of the roads is dangerous to people’s lives as they risk falling into the holes. He added that the roads have been in poor condition for a long period, and despite several complaints to relevant authorities, nothing has been done.

He noted that transporting agricultural produce to markets has become increasingly difficult. He further explained that the poor state of the roads hampers access to essential services for residents who largely depend on agriculture. He asked district engineers to consider their plight and construct a road to ease their activities.

Mary Atuzarirwe, the area councillor of Bugyera Parish, Buyanja Sub County, said the poor road conditions have disrupted businesses, hindered access to health facilities, and made it difficult for children to attend school. She appealed to the relevant authorities to intervene and construct the roads.

In response, Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the Chairperson LCIII of Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, acknowledged the challenge, admitting that the roads are in a poor state. However, he stressed that the ministry has already inspected the roads and plans are underway to construct them, urging residents to be patient as their concerns are addressed.
