Local leaders and residents in Rwanja East parish, Muyanga sub-county Mitooma district, have raised concern over increasing cases of theft in the area. An urgent security meeting was organized, during which night patrols and house-to-house investigations were agreed upon as measures to resolve the challenge.

Speaking to Boona Radio, the Rwanja East LC2 Chairperson, Mr. Byambwenu George, highlighted the rise in theft cases, particularly in Nyagwanya Cell, Nyaruzinga, and Omurijeebe, where residents regularly find their properties missing both inside and outside their homes. He said they suspect local thieves are working with dealers outside Mitooma district, selling stolen items in Buhunga Subcounty.

He noted that goats, cows, hens, coffee, bananas, and household items are among the most commonly stolen property. In response, an urgent meeting attended by all LC1 Chairpersons from parish cells and willing residents was held this evening to address the thefts, which have left residents frustrated and in misery after losing their property.

Mr. Byambwenu further confirmed that the security meeting resolved to strengthen cooperation between residents and local leaders through house-to-house investigations to trace stolen property in suspected homes.

The meeting also proposed drafting letters to request support and cooperation from the RDC of Mitooma District, the DPC, and Mayanga Subcounty OC Station. They want suspects to be arrested and punished in accordance with the law, security night patrols strengthened, and unidentified persons without proper identification from LC1 Chairpersons apprehended.

The Nyaruzinga Cell LC1 Chairperson, Mr. Kasyata Costante, also revealed that some of his property—including four goats, hens, coffee, hand hoes, and pangas—was stolen by unknown thieves. He appreciated the value of the security meetings that have been convened.

Mr. Kasyata called for cooperation from local leaders and residents, together with the Subcounty GISO and OC Station, in partnership with the District RDC and DPC security leadership.

Meanwhile, reports from both local leaders and residents confirm continued theft of household and garden property, leaving the community in frustration, suffering, and misery. Mitooma District security has been called upon to intervene.
