The 2024 Boona FM Cup kicked off on Sunday, drawing enthusiastic support from football lovers across Rukungiri District. Launched in 2023 to nurture and showcase local talent, the tournament has quickly become a key highlight on the district’s sports calendar. Boona FM Managing Director, Mr. Maanige Wenceslas, emphasized the station’s commitment to uplifting local athletes and promoting sports development.

Sunday’s matches commenced at 11:30 a.m., spread across five designated playgrounds. The Rukungiri Main Stadium hosted teams from Rukungiri Municipality and Nyakagyeme Sub-County. Meanwhile, Nyakanyinya Playground in Ruhinda Sub-County featured matches involving teams from Rujumbura County, except for Nyakagyeme, which played at the stadium. Rumbugu Playground was the venue for contests among teams from Kebisoni Sub-County, Buyanja Sub-County, and Town Council. Additionally, teams from Nyakishenyi, Nyarushanje, and Kebisoni Town Council played at Nyarushanje Model Primary School Playground.

At the end of the day, only one team from each playground (only two teams selected from those that played in Rukungiri main stadium) secured a spot in the quarterfinals. Advancing teams include Kebisoni Sub-County, Kebisoni Town Council, Eastern Division, Southern Division, Ruhinda Sub-County, and Bugangari Sub-County. The quarterfinals are set for November 24, 2024, with teams vying for the coveted title.

The winning team will be awarded a bull valued at 2 million shillings and a trophy, while the runners-up will receive 1 million shillings.
The tournament continues to inspire and strengthen community ties while spotlighting Rukungiri’s growing football talent.
