Ms. Peace Rugambwa, the leader of Boona Bageigahare Nyekundire Group in Western Uganda, has publicly criticized Hon. Major General Jim Muhwezi, Rujumbura County MP and Security Minister, for allegedly sabotaging service delivery in Rukungiri District.

The remarks were made during the burial of Francis Nuwagaba in Bugangari Sub County, where Rugambwa’s concerns were conveyed by the group’s assistant spokeswoman, Deus Dedit Murenzi.

Boona Bageigahare Nyekundire Group, a mobilization group aligned with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), was formed to combat homestead poverty by securing state support for agricultural initiatives. The group initially registered 45,000 members from Rukungiri District and 185,000 from various districts in South Western Uganda, including Ntungamo, Rukiga, Rubanda, Kabale, and Buhweju. Members paid a registration fee of 12,000 Ugandan Shillings to receive support for onion seedlings and livestock such as goats, pigs, cows, and poultry.

However, the group’s activities have stagnated since 2017 due to political disagreements between Rugambwa and Minister Muhwezi. Despite a directive from President Yoweri Museveni to reconcile and prioritize development efforts, a reconciliation meeting was unsuccessful at the district headquarters. Rugambwa believes Minister Muhwezi continues to sabotage the group’s activities, delaying the delivery of promised support.

Speaking through Murenzi, Rugambwa urged residents of Rukungiri to advocate for reconciliation between her and the minister, noting that state support is readily available but hindered by Muhwezi’s alleged interference.

Topher Karabaye, Chairperson of Boona Bageigahare Nyekundire Group in Rukungiri District, also expressed concern, emphasizing that the group is state-backed and was established by President Museveni and his brother, General Salim Saleh, to address homestead poverty. He lamented that individual political interests have derailed the group’s mission.

Gard Muhoozi, the District Councilor for Bugangari Sub County, commended Rugambwa for funding high-quality medical care for the late Nuwagaba. Muhoozi expressed optimism that the group would eventually stabilize, recalling that during a recent state visit, the President referred to Rugambwa as “his daughter,” reaffirming his support for her leadership.

Moses Kanyesigye, the District Chairperson for Disability Affairs within the group, urged members to verify their membership and stand united, warning against further sabotage that could undermine the group’s goals.
