The National Unity Platform (NUP) Party President, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, has attributed Kisoro District’s lack of development to its consistent support for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party. Since President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni took office in 1986, the NRM has maintained a dominant position in Kisoro District, holding the majority of parliamentary seats since 1996.

During a campaign rally for NUP’s candidate in the Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament by-election, Salim Sultana, at Mayor’s Gardens in Kisoro Municipality, Kyagulanyi addressed the crowd. He criticized the district’s voting pattern, referring to the practice of voting for the NRM “Ijana kwi Ijana” (100%), and stated that it has contributed to the area’s underdevelopment. Despite Kisoro’s immense tourism potential, he noted that the district continues to lag behind in development.

Kyagulanyi highlighted that Kisoro’s mountain gorillas generate significant income for both the district and the nation through tourism in the Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Area. Yet, he pointed out that road infrastructure remains inadequate, despite repeated government promises for improvements. He claimed that Kisoro could become as developed as Switzerland if he were president and urged residents to support NUP candidates from the local to the national level to drive change.

Salim Sultana also appealed to supporters, urging them to act as catalysts for change both in Kisoro District and nationally. She pledged to advocate for better healthcare, education, road infrastructure—particularly in tourism areas—and other essential services if elected as the next Woman Member of Parliament for Kisoro District.

Meanwhile, Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed that police have deployed in preparation for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s upcoming visit to Kisoro District, where he will campaign for the NRM candidate, Rose Kabagyeni. Maate also reminded residents to adhere to security guidelines to ensure a peaceful event.
