The Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, has called on Christians across the diocese to observe the Way of the Cross not only by physically carrying the cross but by using the moment to renew and deepen their faith in God.

Speaking at the commencement of the procession at St. Catherine Church in Kitumba Sub-county, Kabale District, Bishop Rubaramira urged the faithful to take time for personal reflection and intense prayer and to spiritually cast their burdens upon the symbolic cross they bear.

“Jesus’ ability to forgive His tormentors, even at the point of death, teaches us valuable lessons in humility, obedience, and resilience,” the bishop said, encouraging believers to embody these virtues as they remember Christ’s passion.

At Christ the King Catholic Parish, the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Fred Birungi, echoed similar sentiments. He called on Christians to remain hopeful in the face of life’s hardships and to place complete trust in God’s will. “By living for God’s glory here on earth, we prepare ourselves for eternal life in heaven,” he added.

The Way of the Cross procession also drew prominent political and community leaders. Kabale Municipality Member of Parliament, Dr. Nicholas Thaddeus Kamara, used the opportunity to advocate for the release of all political prisoners, including veteran opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is currently facing treason charges. Dr. Kamara emphasized that allowing detainees to partake in the Easter joy and reflection is a gesture of national reconciliation and hope.

Michael Byamungu Rwasabutare, Chairperson of the Kabale Traders Association and a committed Catholic, revealed that the annual Way of the Cross has become a significant part of his spiritual and personal life. This year, he dedicated the walk to his political aspirations ahead of the 2025–2026 elections in Kabale Municipality. He urged Christians to stay true to their faith, uphold humility and kindness, and reject sectarianism.

Also present was former Kabale Municipality MP, Andrew Aja Baryayanga, who joined the procession to seek personal renewal and forgiveness. He described the Easter season as a divine gift and encouraged people to use it as an opportunity to forgive one another and foster unity.

The Way of the Cross, a key event in the Christian calendar during Holy Week, continues to serve as a powerful moment of reflection, penitence, and spiritual renewal for many believers across Kabale Diocese.
