Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe of North Kigezi Diocese has been elected chairperson of the Western Uganda Church of Uganda Bishops Fellowship. The election took place on Saturday morning during a retreat at Butagatsi Arena Hotel in Rukungiri Town. The fellowship, which began on Wednesday, brought together bishops from 15 dioceses across the Western region.
Bishop Asiimwe will serve a one-year term, succeeding Bishop Rt. Rev. Amos Magezi of North West Ankole Diocese. Founded in 1976, the fellowship includes all Anglican bishops and their spouses, both active and retired, and rotates its leadership annually.
In his acceptance speech, Bishop Asiimwe expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by his fellow bishops. He emphasized the collective responsibility of uplifting the church to achieve its highest potential. During the retreat, the bishops discussed the importance of creating self-sustaining dioceses that are independent of external donations, which, they noted, could compromise the church’s autonomy.
The fellowship concludes on Sunday with a service at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano, attended by more than 30 bishops and their spouses.
