The North Kigezi Bishop, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, has urged unity and peaceful political engagement among rival aspirants in Rukungiri Municipality ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
While preaching during Christmas Day celebrations at Kinyansano Cathedral, Bishop Asiimwe called on the NRM flag bearer, Gen. Henry Tumukunde, and the opposition PFF flag bearer, Ingrid Turinawe Kamateneti (TIK), to conduct peaceful campaigns and avoid violence, tension, and hatred.
The Bishop emphasized that elections are not war and urged the two leaders and their supporters to cooperate and remain united for the development of Rukungiri Municipality, regardless of the election outcome. The two aspirants were invited before the congregation, where they agreed to maintain peace and work together after elections.
Speaking at the service, Gen. Henry Tumukunde thanked Christians for reaching Christmas Day and appreciated the Church for its development work, pledging support toward the completion of Kinyansano Cathedral. He also called for prayers for Dr. Kizza Besigye, who remains in prison.
Gen. Tumukunde urged supporters from all political sides to avoid chaos, saying leadership should be decided at the ballot box. He pledged to work with Ingrid Turinawe after elections and even attend her celebration if she wins.
On her part, Ingrid Turinawe congratulated Christians upon reaching Christmas and also asked for prayers for Dr. Kizza Besigye. She said she believes God chooses leaders and expressed confidence that her time to lead has come.
However, speaking to Boona FM after the service, Ingrid revealed that she has faced attacks during the campaign period but pledged that her supporters will remain disciplined and peaceful. She also agreed to work with Gen. Tumukunde for the development of Rukungiri Municipality and to attend his celebrations if he wins.
