Political analysts in the Kigezi Sub-Region have urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to meticulously prepare for the 2026 General Elections to ensure peaceful and fair polling.
This call was made during a regional dialogue on the 2026 General Elections held on Monday at the White Horse Inn in Kabale Municipality. The event was organized by Kick Corruption out of Uganda (KICK-U) in partnership with the Uganda National NGO Forum (UNNGOF).
Dr. Mary Wasike Bekoreire, a lecturer in the Department of Governance, Faculty of Social Sciences at Kabale University, emphasized the need for the EC to address issues from the 2021 general elections, such as vote rigging, intimidation, commercialization of politics, and the harassment of opposition candidates and supporters by security officers.
Dr. Joseph Tindyebwa, the former Deputy Secretary General of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), underscored the importance of the EC taking measures to prevent human rights violations and abuses by security agencies during the 2026 elections.
Kakuru Robert Byamugisha, Chief Executive Director of Kick Corruption out of Uganda, urged the EC to enhance collaboration with civil society organizations to promote civic and voter education for the 2026 elections. He also recommended that the EC engage lower government structures to ensure Ugandans are well-informed about democratic processes.
Justice Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, called on the public to actively participate in and respect the electoral process, stressing that fair and transparent elections are a collective responsibility.
