Police in Kabale are investigating a suspected murder by shooting that occurred at Nyanja trading center in Maziba sub-county, Kabale District.
The incident took place on 21st May 2024 at approximately 12:30 AM.
The deceased has been identified as Chris Twinomujuni, a 35-year-old peasant and resident of Rujogooma village, Burambira Parish, Kaharo Sub-county in Kabale District. According to reports, the incident involved Twinomujuni and several other individuals who were drinking and smoking marijuana at a bar owned by a woman named Claire.
The incident was reported by No. 18715 Sergeant Tumwesigye John, a 59-year-old officer-in-charge (OC) of Nyanja station, residing in Nyanja trading center village. Sgt. Tumwesigye reported that upon attempting to disperse the group and enforce the law against smoking narcotics, he and his colleague were met with resistance. The situation escalated when the group tried to block the arrest of their peers and confront the officers.
During the scuffle, the OC discharged his firearm in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Tragically, a stray bullet struck Twinomujuni in the leg, leading to severe bleeding and his subsequent death.
The police have opened a case file, CRB 408/2024, to thoroughly investigate the matter. A team led by ASP Akanyijuka Andrew, OC CID D/SP Mukama Hakim, Regional SOCO AIP Mugabe, and other detectives visited, examined, and documented the crime scene. Witness statements have been collected, and a postmortem has been conducted.
In connection with the incident, three individuals were arrested for attempting to disarm the officer. Additionally, Sgt. Tumwesigye and his colleague, PC Owomuhangi James, have been detained to assist with the investigation.
Authorities have stated that inquiries are ongoing, and the results will determine the next steps in the investigation.
