Police in Buhweju District are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a six-year-old child due to poisoning.
The spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Police, Marcial Tumusiime, disclosed that this incident occurred in Mushasha Central Village, Mushasha Parish, Buhunga Subcounty, Buhweju District. The victim, a student at St. Andrews Nursery School in Mushasha Central Village, Mushasha Parish, Buhunga Subcounty, Buhweju District, lost their life in this unfortunate incident.
According to Tumusiime, it is alleged that on November 2, 2023, Nahwera Julius purchased rat poison, which he then mixed with avocados and placed in his bedroom to eradicate rats. He subsequently left for work. During his absence, his children returned home from school, and one of them unknowingly consumed the poisoned avocados.
Upon his return, Nahwera Julius discovered his son vomiting and rushed him to Mushasha Health Center III, where the child was admitted. Lilian Ahebwa, a 37-year-old councilor for Kyanyabita Parish in Bitsya Subcounty, Buhweju District, reported the case to the police. She further noted that on November 3, 2023, the victim’s condition worsened, prompting his referral to Nsiika Health Center IV, where tragically, he passed away upon arrival.
It is worth mentioning that the father of the deceased had separated from the child’s mother a year ago, leaving him responsible for their five children. The child’s body has been transferred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
