Police in Kabale District have launched a manhunt for the driver of a Toyota Spacio registration number UAX316F following a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old student on Thursday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Mujurizi Oscar, a student at Kigezi High School and a resident of Igabiro Cell, Mwanjari Ward in Southern Division, Kabale.
According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the accident occurred on May 14, 2026, at around 7:20am along the Kabale–Katuna Road in Mwanjari.
“It is alleged that both the motor vehicle and the pedal cyclist were heading in the same direction from Kabale Town towards the Katuna side, with the cyclist riding ahead of the vehicle. The driver reportedly lost control and knocked the cyclist, who died on the spot,” ASP Maate said.
Police said boda boda riders attempted to pursue the vehicle after the crash, but the driver sped away. However, the riders managed to identify and record the vehicle’s registration number before it disappeared.
ASP Maate noted that traffic officers visited and documented the scene before transferring the body to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
“We are working with CCTV operators in Kabale to trace the vehicle and identify the driver responsible for the crash,” he added.
Preliminary police findings indicate that reckless driving was the likely cause of the accident. Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
