Residents and local leaders in Rukungiri District have expressed high expectations from their newly elected leaders following the swearing-in ceremony of the President of Uganda and the ongoing swearing-in of Members of Parliament for the 2026–2031 term.

Speaking to our reporter, Charles Muhwezi, the Councillor representing Persons with Disabilities in Kebisoni Sub-county, said residents expect improved service delivery, especially the completion of stalled government projects.

Muhwezi pointed out key challenges that require urgent attention, including poor road networks, inadequate school infrastructure, and limited health services. He urged leaders to ensure that hospitals are stocked with enough medicines and that government programs directly benefit the people of Rukungiri.

Meanwhile, the newly elected District Councillor for Buhunga Sub-county, Allen Kyakusimire, said residents are hopeful that their leaders will lobby for essential services, particularly clean water, reliable electricity, and improved roads to ease transportation of goods to markets.

Kyakusimire also emphasized the need for leaders to remain connected to the communities that elected them by regularly returning to listen to people’s concerns and maintaining close relationships with voters. She noted that this would strengthen public trust and confidence in leadership.

In response to the concerns raised by residents, the LC5 Chairperson-elect for Rukungiri District, Charles Andrewson Katebire, pledged to prioritize public service delivery once he assumes office.

Katebire said his administration will focus on streamlining district operations to ensure effective service delivery. He also promised to investigate concerns surrounding the Kahengye water project, particularly why some residents did not benefit from it, and ensure that the matter is addressed.

He further pledged to work towards improving electricity connectivity, road infrastructure, and other essential public services to enhance the welfare of residents across the district.
