Police in Sheema District have arrested a 56-year-old woman on allegations of causing the death of her nine-year-old grandson.
The incident occurred on December 2, 2024, at around 5:00 PM in Rwamurongora Cell, Karera South Ward, Kashozi Division, Sheema Municipality.
Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and identified the suspect as Medrine Kyomugisha, a peasant and resident of the same area. The victim, a Primary One pupil at Nyakashambya Primary School, was her grandson.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident stemmed from an accusation that the boy had stolen UGX 14,000 from Kyomugisha on December 1. When confronted, the child reportedly denied the allegation. This led Kyomugisha and a neighbor, identified only as Katehangwa, to beat the boy with sticks, leaving him severely injured.
The Local Council 1 Chairperson of Rwamurongora Cell, Tibanyendera Yorokamu, stated that the boy’s condition deteriorated, prompting his rushed transfer to Kabwohe Health Center IV. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said the body of the deceased, who had multiple bruises and visible assault wounds, was transferred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
