The Management of Nyabikoni Secondary School in Kabale Municipality has taken disciplinary action by suspending 56 students following their alleged involvement in a violent strike that occurred on Saturday night.

The majority of the affected students are boys from Senior Six, Senior Five, and Senior Four.

According to students who preferred to remain anonymous, the unrest began on Friday when two teachers, identified as Bernard Kafuba and Agricola Ngabirano, reportedly conducted an assembly where they resorted to caning some Senior Six students with electric cables.

The reason behind this punishment was said to be their alleged use of the Runyankore-Rukiga language within the school premises.

Feeling aggrieved by the teachers’ actions, a group of students became incensed. They reported the incident to the school administration, led by School Director Rev Fr Christopher Busingye, but no action was taken.

However, in response to the student’s claims, Nyabikoni Secondary School Head Teacher, Elly Turyasiima, informed our reporter that the suspended students were protesting against the school administration’s decision to enforce compulsory haircuts and the lack of sufficient leisure time.

Turyasiima further mentioned that the accused teachers would be subjected to an investigation while the school board convenes to decide the fate of the suspended students.
