Two people were killed and another one injured by landslide during a heavy down pour at Karandagasi stone and sand quarry Kitojo parish Bubaare sub county Rubanda district.
According to Elly Maate the Kigezi region Police spokesman, the incident occurred on 29/04/2023 at around 2:00PM
He identified the decesed as Ryabyoma John Bosco 46 a resident of Rwabarera cell Kitojo parish Bubaare sub county and his son Magara Andrew aged 16 a senior 2 student at Creamland High school in Kabale municipality died on spot,
A worker only known as Boy was recovered still alive and was rushed to Kabale referral hospital where he is admitted.
Maate explains that the three reported for work at that quarry, and while they were mining sand, it started raining at around 1100hrs.
That at around 1300, they took shelter from the rain in cave made of rocks and sand near where they were mining the sand. They had also lit a fire to keep them warm.
Unfortunately, the wall of the cave then collapsed on them instantly, covering them underneath.
Scene was visited by a team of security officers from both Kabale and Rubanda including the RDC Kabale, Diso Kabale, Diso Rubanda DHO Kabale and police officers from both districts.
The injured was rushed to Kabale Regional Refferal Hospital by the Kabale ambulance.
While villagers were digging trying to recover the bodies, eventually an excavator from Kabale was brought and did the needful.
maate says Community policing was done at the scene to sensitize the community against dangerous activities like sand mining in such dangerous situations especially during rainy season.
Postmortem was done at the scene by DHO Kabale and bodies handed over to the relatives for burial.
