A total of 14 suspects have escaped from the Rubanda Central Police Station cells, prompting a swift manhunt by police in the district. The escape occurred on Sunday night when the suspects exploited a crack in the station’s wall, removing bricks to break free.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Sub-region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident on Thursday and expressed concerns about the inadequate infrastructure in the newly created districts of Rubanda and Rukiga, which were previously part of Kabale District. These challenges, according to Maate, have contributed to the incident.
Despite the setback, police are actively working to re-arrest the fugitives. Maate revealed that two of the suspects have already been apprehended, with efforts continuing to track down the remaining individuals. Some of the escaped suspects had reportedly overstayed in custody due to the lack of dedicated offices for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in both Rubanda and Rukiga.
Authorities remain committed to bringing all the suspects back into custody to face justice.
