Residents and local leaders in Nyabitete Parish, Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, have suspended night movements as part of efforts to combat the rampant livestock theft in their area.
The seven cells in Nyabitete Parish have formed a 12-member enforcement committee to conduct night patrols, apprehend travelers, and address unauthorized activities such as bars operating outside the stipulated hours of 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. and transporters traveling beyond 10 p.m., who are suspected of transporting stolen livestock.
The livestock thieves have reportedly resorted to slaughtering animals on-site and taking away the meat and other products.
Emmanuel Twesigye, the LC1 Chairperson of Kanombe and a member of the enforcement operations commended the initiative for restoring stability during the night. He urged residents to comply with the enforcement measures to ensure the success of their efforts.
Charles Karahukayo, the Nyabitete Parish Councilor, expressed a strong commitment to eliminating theft in the parish. He called on neighboring parishes to join the fight against theft and urged the police to prioritize presenting suspects in court to ensure justice is served.
Emmy Agaba Rubondo, the LC3 Chairperson of Buyanja Sub County, reiterated his support for the operations and appealed to the police to take a firm stance against suspects and their defenders. He criticized individuals who defend arrested suspects, emphasizing the need for strict measures.
