Kyenjojo, Rwenzori West – A tragic road accident occurred in the early hours of August 28, 2024, claiming the lives of 10 passengers. The accident took place at approximately 4:00 AM at Kaihura along the Fort Portal-Kampala highway.
The incident involved an Isuzu bus, registered UBE 807T, belonging to Pokopoko Company, which was traveling from Kampala, and a Toyota Hiace van, registered UBR 812G, heading from Fort Portal. According to initial reports, the Hiace, which was carrying 10 passengers, veered off its lane and collided head-on with the oncoming bus. All 10 occupants of the Hiace, including the driver, perished in the crash. The victims included eight men and two women.
Local authorities, including the Regional Traffic Officer (RTO) and District Traffic Officer (DTO), promptly responded to the scene. The bodies were transported to Kyenjojo Hospital for postmortem examinations, and the vehicles involved were towed to the police station. The driver of the bus fled the scene and is currently on the run.
Preliminary investigations suggest that reckless driving by the taxi driver may have caused the accident. Police inquiries are ongoing.
