Residents of Nyakabungo Parish in Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, have embarked on a project to standardize the Nyakabungo playground, which has been in poor condition for a long time. The initiative, aimed at promoting sports and community well-being, began with a fundraising event held on July 27, 2024, at Nyakabungo Church of Uganda Parish, North Kigezi Diocese.

Sylivia Turinawe, a resident, emphasized the importance of having a proper playground, especially given the presence of Katungu Primary School, where children can benefit from a safe space for play. She also highlighted that the playground would serve the broader community, providing a venue for sports and physical activities.

Levi Kasibayo Migyenda, who is overseeing the project, stressed the playground’s potential to foster local sports and talent. He noted that a well-maintained playground can strengthen social connections, stimulate emotional development, and boost self-confidence and self-esteem among children and youth. By engaging in positive activities, children are less likely to misbehave or bully others, as their energies are channeled into more constructive outlets.

Kasibayo added that spending time on the playground allows children and youth to experience a more carefree childhood and helps them process their emotions in a healthy way.

Aron Nasasira, a youth who has been using the deteriorated playground, expressed gratitude to those who initiated the project. He noted that a well-maintained playground encourages physical activity, creativity, and imagination, all of which contribute to cognitive development. Nasasira also mentioned that such a facility could attract families to the community, signaling a healthy and happy neighborhood where families can thrive.
