Police in Ibanda district are investigating a case of suicide by poison by Akankunda Scovia, a 35-year-old woman who worked at the Ibanda Central Market and lived in Kafunjo cell, Bufanda ward, Bufanda Division, Ibanda Municipality.
It is alleged that the deceased was a member of Depth Ministries Church, led by Pastor Bukenya Daniel. She had entrusted her savings to the pastor, who had promised to return them to her whenever she needed them.
However, when she requested her money, he claimed that she had only saved 800,000 shillings, even though her savings actually amounted to 16,000,000 shillings.
The deceased reported the matter to the police, but the pastor did not respond to their calls. She was advised to seek legal redress in civil courts, but she returned to the pastor’s church the next day. When he refused to return her money, she took poison in front of him. She was rushed to the nearest clinic, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The deceased’s body has been taken to Ruhoko Health Center 4 mortuary for a postmortem examination. The police are still investigating the matter.
