Police in Rukungiri have arrested two men suspected of stealing number plates in the municipality.
The suspects are Deus Mpamize, a 32-year-old resident of Mitooma district, and Issa Muyambi Mbumburi, a 29-year-old resident of Nyabitete Bugangari in Rukungiri district.
According to the Rukungiri District Police Commander (DPC), SSP Musa Tibakirana, the police have recovered four number plates from the suspects: UAN646V, UAH126Z, UAY942L, and UAJ979F. However, the police are still investigating 15 other cases of number plate theft.
ASP Tibakirana revealed that the police have intelligence that there are many rackets of number plate thieves in the area, and vowed to crack down on them. He urged the public to avoid paying thieves to recover their number plates, as this only supports their criminal enterprise.
Residents of Rukungiri, including Gashom Siimoomwe, Ester Rwamunahe, Wilson Turyamushangayo, and Precious Ariinda, praised the police for their efforts in apprehending the suspects. They revealed that the thieves had been calling them and demanding between 200,000 and 500,000 Ugandan shillings to return their number plates.
