Authorities and parents at Kayanga Primary School in Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District, are urging the government to build new classrooms to replace the deteriorating ones, which pose a risk to the children’s safety.

The head teacher, Twinomujuni Robert, mentions that parents began constructing four classrooms, later receiving 35 million from the government to help complete the project. However, this funding was only sufficient for plastering, flooring, and shuttering, leaving the painting unfinished.

Twinomujuni highlights the dire condition of their current classrooms, posing risks to the pupils, especially during the rainy season. Additionally, the school lacks adequate furniture and sanitary facilities, with only one toilet serving 500 pupils.

Innocent Tumukwase, the LC1 chairperson of Bugarama Cell in Kayanga Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county, appeals to the government to urgently address the dilapidated classrooms for the pupils’ safety. He emphasizes their support for the NRM and their right to receive social services like other areas in the district.

Hon. Mathias Mwesigwa Rwabugumi, the Nyarushanje Sub-county District Councilor, mentions government plans to renovate various schools, including Kayanga Primary School. He explains that the district received funds from the Ministry of Local Government, amounting to 35 million to complete the building initiated by parents. However, due to insufficient funds, the project remains incomplete.

Rwabugumi stresses the need for additional buildings at Kayanga Primary School, as the current ones date back to 1948 and are not suitable for use as classrooms. He reassures that the school has allocated more funds in the upcoming financial year.

He urges parents to collaborate with the government in developing the school, suggesting they begin renovation efforts while awaiting government assistance.
