The 2nd Division Military Court Martial has sentenced a UPDF soldier to 30 years in prison over murder of a civilian and attempted murder of another civillian following a bar brawl on Christmas, December 25 2022 in Rubaare sub county Ntungamo district.
Court presided over by the second division court martial chairman Col Rogers Ndikusoka Kitwala seating at Rubaare town council hall sentenced Pte Albert Eyanu Fred to 20 years in prison for murder and 10 years imprisonment for manslaughter but they are to run concurrently meaning he is to serve 20yrs.
Court heard that Pte Eyanu 41, on December 25 2022 shot and killed Benard Namanya after the bar owner Eric Kadugara requested him to leave the bar at past midnight in vain which resulted in a scuffle.
He also shot and injured Kadugara in the process.
Meanwhile, the General Court Martial in Makindye, Kampala also sentenced two Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers to nine and six months imprisonment respectively after they were convicted of spreading harmful propaganda.
The two soldiers L/CPL Apollo Bigirwa, 41, who’s attached to the 2nd Division Infantry Guard Battalion in Mbarara District and Pte Stuart Nuwahereza, 33, attached to the 3rd Division Battalion in Karamoja appeared yesterday before the court chaired by Brig Gen Freeman Mugabe to get their sentences after they were earlier convicted by the same court.
On February 22, while seeking a non-custodial sentence, Bigirwa told court that out of frustration, he was compelled to record an audio that was later shared on social media platforms by his colleague,
