The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has reassured residents and visitors of continued safety and stability along Lake Edward and within Queen Elizabeth National Park, following an attack on a UPDF response team at Rweshama Landing Site in Rukungiri District on October 1st, 2025.

According to a statement released by the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division Public Information Officer, Maj. Kiconco Tabaro, armed assailants opened fire on the UPDF team that had been deployed to respond to reports of armed robberies targeting local fishermen. In the ensuing exchange, Staff Sergeant Muhindo Johnson, the commander of the team, succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack.

Maj. Tabaro conveyed the army’s condolences to the family and comrades of the late officer and assured the public that investigations are underway to identify the attackers and their motives.

He further revealed that Ugandan and Congolese officials are set to meet soon to enhance cross-border coordination and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite the incident, Maj. Tabaro emphasized that the overall security situation remains stable, urging residents around Rweshama and neighboring areas to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. He also confirmed that tourism activities within Queen Elizabeth National Park are continuing without any disruption.

The UPDF reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Uganda’s territorial integrity and protecting citizens from any threats along the shared border.
