The President General of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Jimmy Akena, has called on the people of Ankole to unite with him in the struggle to liberate Uganda from what he described as a poor political regime.
Akena made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing party loyalists from the Ankole region during an event held at College View in Nyakabirizi Division, Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality. The function was organized to commemorate the return of former President Apollo Milton Obote from exile in Tanzania in 1980.
Akena said the country is grappling with major challenges in sectors such as health and infrastructure. He noted that over 10 million Ugandan children are living like orphans, lacking access to basic necessities such as food and education.
Miria Muhwezi, the UPC Chairperson of the Women’s League, dismissed claims that the party sidelines women who are interested in joining politics. She emphasized that women are actively involved in various political and community activities at the grassroots level.
The function attracted top party leaders and mobilizers from several districts, including Ntungamo, Rubirizi, Mitooma, Isingiro, Bushenyi, and Sheema.
