Thursday evening, the Uganda Parliament Sports Team, led by the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Sports Club, Hon Asuman Basalirwa for Bugiri Municipality, crossed the Katuna one-stop border to Rwanda. The purpose of their journey is to participate in the 13th Edition of the East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games, scheduled to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, from December 7 to December 19, 2023. The overarching theme for this year’s games is “For a progressive, peaceful, and all-inclusive EAC.”

Participants from the Six EAC partner states, namely Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Burundi, as well as the regional assembly, the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), are expected to engage in various sports disciplines. These include football (men only), netball, volleyball, basketball, darts, golf, and athletics, catering to both men and women.

Katabazi Francis Katongore, the Kalungu East Member of Parliament and shadow Minister for East Africa Community Affairs, emphasized the significance of the games in fostering unity between Uganda and Rwanda and addressing conflicts. He sees the event as a bridge to enhance trade relations among East African countries. The Bugabula South Member of Parliament, Henry Maurice Kibalya, highlighted the games’ role in promoting unity and friendship among East African nations.

The team received a ceremonial send-off on Thursday from Speaker Anita Annet Among, who underscored the core principle of the EAC, aiming to widen, deepen, and tighten East African integration. The team is enthusiastic and prepared to compete for the trophy in the spirit of regional collaboration and sportsmanship.

It’s wonderful to have the parliamentary team in place. If Parliament can unite by such, why is it that East African countries unite in business.
    Why do they conflict.
