Tragedy struck in Kanyamisinga LC1, Nyakishojwa Parish, Katete Sub County, Kanungu District after two people, identified as Mugarura Anaklet and Niwamanya Barnet, lost their lives in a devastating sandslide incident on the afternoon of February 8th, 2025.

Reports indicate that the two men, both local peasants, were engaged in loading sand onto a tipper lorry at a quarry in the area when disaster struck. Eyewitnesses recount the horror as the ground gave way, engulfing the workers in a torrent of sand as they desperately tried to escape. Despite valiant efforts to rescue them, both Anaklet and Barnet succumbed to suffocation beneath the weight of the landslide.

The news of the tragic incident spread swiftly, prompting a swift response from police.

Led by OC Kihiihi Police Station, Asp Tumukunde, a team comprising homicide detectives, forensic experts, and armed personnel rushed to the scene to assess the situation.

Statements from witnesses were meticulously recorded, shedding light on the sequence of events leading up to the catastrophe. The scene was carefully examined and documented by the Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), while the bodies of the deceased were recovered and transported to Kambuga Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

In response to the disaster, the sand quarry was promptly closed down as investigations into the matter continue.
